Traditional Sources Of Knowledge
Do you remember the big encyclopedia sets like Encyclopedia Brittanica? Our schools used to have a set in the library. I bought a set for our family (this was long before the digital age!). I enjoyed picking a volume and opening it at random then reading the articles about history and science and famous people. My children referenced it sometimes for school projects too but now my encyclopedia set rests quietly today, not having been opened for decades. Why? It is outdated. It is no longer a reliable source of information. Much of the things recorded and reported in it are static and still valid, but there is so much more that has been lived and built and experienced since this set was printed. There are many revisions and corrections to be done. I don’t trust it anymore.
Traditional sources of knowledge tend to become static and unreliable if they do not maintain healthy “source feeds”. A professor at a college must continue to study in their area of expertise or risk falling behind the developing ideas colleagues propose. Printed materials become stale or inaccurate as the body of knowledge grows. Knowledge of things contunually grows because people continually grow.
Supernatural Sources Of Knowledge
What if I told you about a different information system readily available today? One that contains all history, all science, and all famous people? A system so complete and advanced that it already has all future inventions recorded! One that knows all the possible answers to all the possible questions about all the possible topics. This system is free, yet will cost you much. It is hidden, yet easy to access for those who know how. It holds the past present and future, and never needs a revision. Interested?
We call Him God. Our God, the Creator, the Sovereign King of Kings, the Father of Jesus Christ, is the only one who knows everything. Every. Thing. Did you know that the Lord does not think about anything! Why? Because He knows it all! Thinking is a process of sifting information, making comparisons and evaluations, then arriving at a conclusion or decision. God has nothing to think about. He is outside of time yet within time. He knows the end before the beginning begins. He knows all possible knowledge, and it is freely available to those who know Him.
Access To All Knowledge
John 15:15 (NKJV) No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you.
Everything God the Father revealed to Jesus have been made known to us! Is there anything Jesus doesn’t know? (None of us on earth are qualified to answer that.)
John 14:26 (NKJV) But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
The only Person capable of teaching us “all things” must know all those things. God is the best possible math teacher! He is an outstanding welder, and can train horses better than anyone else. He is the world authority on all subjects, because He is the Designer and Creator of time space and matter.
1 John 2:20 (NKJV) But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.
John the Beloved is telling us that since the Source of all knowledge lives inside born again believers, we “know” (think “have access to”) all natural and supernatural knowledge. Anointing means enabling or empowering by the Holy Spirit to do supernatural exploits. One of those supernatural exploits is access to all knowledge. It should be obvious, but I will say it anyway. “All knowledge” means all righteous knowledge, knowledge of things that are true, honest, righteous, pure, lovely, virtuous, or praiseworthy (see Phip 4:8). God is not going to reveal how to cook the best meth or build a better bomb to commit evil with. But He will help us with any honest question about how to do something, or improve something, or understand stuff in our lives. He cares, and He wants to help!
Why Don’t We Know?
If what I am saying about God’s library and our access to it is true, it raises some questions. Hard questions, like these:
1) Why are so many children starving to death every year?
2) What is the absolute cure for all cancer? (why not all disease?)
3) How can we reduce or eliminate evil behavior and increase good behavior?
4) How can we help people who are bound by addictions to drugs or alcohol?
5) How can we be free of racism?
I’m sure you get the idea. If God knows how to fix all our problems, why hasn’t He? The answer may surprise you and offend you. IT IS NOT HIS PROBLEM! It is OUR problem! God gave the earth to man and told him to rule it and look after it. Man gave it to Satan who has been running free and enjoying himself at our expense ever since the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. We have the responsibility and authority to fix all our problems. But we blame God rather than admit our failures and shortcomings.
God is not responsible for politics. People are. God is not responsible for how we treat each other. We are. God is not responsible for all the murder greed and violence we do. We are. The reason He gave us access to all His supernatural information is so we can go to Him and ask Him for help! But pride and rebellion rules most hearts. Proud rebellious people will not ask God for anything. We will figure it out on our own. And that’s why we are in the mess we are in.
Attend To Know
The answer to our problems and the title of this article is from the Book of Proverbs.
Proverbs 4:1 (AV) Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
This is a command to listen to God. We are to hear His instructions. And we are to give attention to listen closely, and be alert to whatever He says. You cannot get the information if you don’t show up. I believe the Almighty God has oceans of information He wants to share with His family. Trouble is, not many children of God enjoy this benefit because we do not give enough attention to Him.
This begins with regular Bible reading. I heard recently that only an estimated 2% of all Christians in North America read their Bible at all. 2%! That is horrific! How can we claim to know and represent the Lord Jesus Christ when almost all of us completely ignore what He said? Even if it is really 5%, or even 10%, that is a grievous statistic. No wonder the church is so weak and mocked daily! We have lost our way and don’t know it. It also offends the Lord because He has given us so much and we turn up our nose and walk away.
Reading the Bible is a great start, but we must also study the Bible. The Bible contains Words that God said, but they are not all the Words He has ever said. For example, the specific Words He spoke to create Jupiter and place it and maintain it are not recorded in the Bible. Studying the Bible helps us know and understand Him better. It also prepares us to hear and understand what He may be saying today. If we are ignorant of what He already said we are unable to hear what He is saying today.
Deuteronomy 8:3 (NKJV) So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.
Matthew 4:4 (NKJV) But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
We do not live by our efforts. We live by faith in Him (Hab 2:4. Rom 1:17. Gal 3:11. Heb 10:38). Faith in Him begins in knowing what He said then believing what He said and acting on what He said. Reading the Bible exposes you to what He said, and you can grow your faith on that. But the answer to today’s gnarly problems is not necessarily written in the Bible. It may be a fresh revelation based on the Bible but containing other details not in the Bible. However, if no one pays attention to the Bible then learns to hear what He is saying right now, those gnarly problems go unresolved and our pain keeps growing.
I challenge you right now. Read your Bible! Immerse yourself in it! Read 3 chapters every day. Then go to 5 chapters a day. Try to read 10 chapters a day for a month. Develop until you can read 15-20 chapters every day! This will create a thirst and a hunger for the Word so that you will not miss your daily time reading His Word.
Get some study tools. There are many freely available online. You have no excuse! Learn to study the Bible. Expect Him to teach you! He promised He would, so give Him some attention and expect Him to respond.
If enough of God’s people give enough attention to Him and His Word we will see all our tough problems begin to disappear as we apply the hidden knowledge He has reserved for all His children.
Prayer for Repentance and Salvation.
If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and your Saviour, I invite you to ask Him into your heart. If you know the Lord but have not been giving Him the attention He deserves I invite you to consider your ways and repent. He is faithful and righteous to wipe your slate clean when you confess your sin to Him! (1 John 1:9)
1 John 1:9 (NASB95) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
He gave His life for you, and you honour Him when you give your life for Him. It is the right thing to do!
1 Corinthians 6:20 (AV) For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.
You must give yourself to God for Him to come into your life and help you change. He will not force you! Ever. But oh! The joy and peace and hope He gives you!
Romans 12:1–2 (NKJV) 1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2) And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Romans 10:9 (NKJV) that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
You must acknowledge Jesus Christ is Lord, and you must believe He was resurrected from the dead by the Father, alive forever.
Say this prayer out loud.
Heavenly Father I turn to you and acknowledge You as the Almighty God, eternal and sovereign over all. I have been rebellious, selfish, and deceived trying to live without you. I believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that He died on the cross to redeem me from death and sin, and that He rose from the dead, alive forever with You. I ask you to forgive me of all my sin, known and unknown. Please come into my life as my Lord and my Saviour. Thank you for forgiving me, and redeeming me from sin. I choose to trust You and put You first in every area of my life. I will love You and serve You with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind, and all my resources, for the rest of my life, beginning right now. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen!
If you prayed this to the Lord, please let me know! I have some resources to share with you, and will help you on your journey with the Lord.
